That Golden Feeling

(SOCCER - NS) Cape Breton High School Soccer League

Sat Nov 4, 2017 - Well, what a first year for Karl Mac Neil and his BEC Bears girls team. Never lost a game heading into the Provincial Finals, being played at Veterans Turf, in New Waterford, and kept that record intact with a thrilling come from behind 3-2 win over New Germany through a "Golden Goal"
After a previous drubbing of NKEC, 5-0 on Friday, the confidence was high for the team as they had a night to think about the next days match.
Winning the toss and going with the wind usually seems a safe strategy going forward, but some very sloppy marking allowed New Germany to get on the board and close out the first half up 1-0.
With the wind at their back, the confidence of New Germany increased when they were awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal and hit a rocket into the goal to put them up by 2 with still a half hour to play.
BEC pulled one back when Caleigh Mac Pherson found time and space and poked the ball to restore life to the home team and their fans.
New Germany were content to just heave the ball up field hoping to catch a hole in the BEC defence, but those holes were limited and steady keeping and a stout back line prevented any penetration.
BEC were awarded a corner kick with 7 minutes left and with the ball falling to the floor, Maddy Bresowar, a late sub, with her first touch got her foot on the ball to level the score.
There was no more attacking and the final whistle blew.
The importance of winning the toss was evident as BEC called tails, and the flip of the coin worked in their favor.
With only 3 minutes gone, a lofted ball got over the back of the NewGermany defender and Emma Gale caught all of it to bruise the fingertips of the keeper to unleash a loud roar from all concerned to give BEC the Division 2 NSSAF Girls title.
Getting their names on a banner attached to the walls of the BEC gym will give a lifetime evidence of this fine effort.
Well done players, coaches and parents.
You made us proud.
